Since attaining his Master’s of Community Planning/Urban Design and Bachelor’s of Architecture degrees in 2006, Mike has been on a rigorous path to become the youngest person to be registered under the modern Architect licensure system.  On this path, he has been involved in many projects including residential, commercial, civic, and educational.  He has also been involved in downtown rehabilitation and historic preservation projects for his construction company, Appleseed Workshop.

Mike’s commitment to sustainable design and construction is displayed by the fact that he attained his LEED Accredited Professional status during the summer after his third year of Architecture school.  Mike actually organized the efforts of the entire office where he worked at the time to likewise attain LEED  Accreditation.

As a founding Principal of Appleseed Workshop, Mike brings a focus and drive that propels his colleagues to do quality work with great attention to detail and schedule.  He is referred to as the “big Idea man,” bringing clarity to a situation by helping others formulate a goal that can be attained with the available time and resources.  Experience in the construction of places gives Mike a practical perspective to the design process – which does not limit his design ability, but allows him to see the project as a completed whole instead of just a pretty sketch.

Teaching is a passion that Mike pursues as the Director of a high school forum called studio i, which is sponsored by the Birmingham Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.  He also serves on the Board of the Birmingham Architectural Foundation, awarding scholarships to students interested in pursuing careers in architecture.
