The Gibson

The Gibson Project is a proposal for a low to mid income twelve unit apartment building located on one of Birmingham's main downtown arteries, midway between the financial and educational centers.  The project's goal is to explore the concept of providing a positive fusion between row house and condominium environments; taking the best of both and combining them in a way which re-inforces the communal living environment.  The massing of the project plays on the relationship between the existing brick shell and the newly constructed living units.  The new metal clad construction appears to have been set within the shell from above, leaving area below for a spacious parking garage and protected entry.  This sheltered parking and entry situation speaks to the nature of private space and the feeling of security located within a well traveled urban environment.  The units themselves break from the normal program of residential living in order to respond to the needs and practices of modern living, in what we feel is a spatially efficient, yet highly rewarding space.
